Why We Celebrate – A Brief History of International Migrants Day

International Migrants Day is observed every year on December 18 to recognize the contributions of migrants worldwide and to advocate for the protection of their rights. The date commemorates the adoption of the UN Convention on the Rights of Migrant Workers on 18 December 1990.

Officially proclaimed by the United Nations in 2000, the day also traces its roots to grassroots migrant movements in Asia, especially among Filipino migrants, who first marked the day in 1997. Today, it serves as a global platform to celebrate diversity, raise awareness, and foster inclusion in host communities around the world.
